Annual Donal Powell Tournament Saturday 9th September 2017
The young man who this Tournament is named after tragically died at the early age of 27 back in March 1993. Donal is fondly remembered by Pearse Óg Gaels for his footballing ability and his warm personality. He was a prominent underage player, mostly starring at full forward, winning County Championship medals at all grades from Juvenile to Senior. At Minor level he really excelled with his goals winning many tight games.
Donal had a presence both on and off the field of play. His humour was infectious with his jesting lighting up many a changing room or keeping his teammates in mirth back in the old Social Club. The banter was always mighty when Donal was in your company where he could easily deflate any ego that was rising just that little bit too much!
Not only did Donal contribute to the Club through playing but he was also instrumental in setting up our Under 10 age group within it. He helped out also with other youth teams and indeed had just been appointed Under 14 Team Manager in the the weeks previous to his untimely death. It was for these reasons that the Club saw fit to establish an Under 10 competition in his memory and it is testament to his popularity that it has grew to it's present size.
So if you are fortunate to be at Pearse Óg Park and witness young Gaels giving their all and having great fun doing so, spare a thought for a young Gael no longer with us but whose spirit enthuses all that you see there.
